September
Thematic Unit: Me, Myself and I!
Topics of Study: During the first month of school we will practice recalling mastered personal information, describing self using attributes (i.e. hair color, eye color, weight, height), indicating preferences and interests.
Special activity: Presentation about self to peers in both classes
Parental Responsibility: Send school supplies from supply list

October
Thematic Unit: Election!
Topics of Study: We will learn about the upcoming presidential race. We will explore what it means to vote, and practice simple graphing and comparison concepts.
Special activity: Pumpkin Patch field trip
Parental Responsibility: Admission for pumpkin patch, permission slip, disposable sack lunch

November
Thematic Unit: Master Chef, Jr!
Topics of Study: We will talk about the processes of preparing and cooking food, measurement and temperature, basic nutrition, and using MyPlate to make healthy food choices.
Special activity: Grocery shopping field trip for Thanksgiving lunch ingredients. Thanksgiving lunch prepared by students for one another.
Parental Responsibility: Payment for tri-met bus ticket, and $3 or $4 for student to use at Wal-Mart, permission slip

December
Thematic Unit: Family Ties!
Topics of Study: We will learn about different generations of people in our families and community. We will make decorations and gifts for our elders in need of holiday spirit.
Special activities: Shopping Field Trip to the Dollar Tree for supplies for gifts for a nearby retirement community; opportunities to visit with people of different generations
Parental Responsibility: Payment for tri-met bus ticket, and $1 or $2 for student to use at the Dollar Tree, permission slip

January
Thematic Unit: SRC Glee Club!
Topics of Study: With the support of our music teacher, Mrs. Galante, we will learn about instruments, rhythm and pitch and how to apply them during a live performance.
Special activity: We will have a special musical performance on stage for our friends and family.
Parental Responsibility: Optional attendance at musical performance

February
Thematic Unit: Sirens!
Topics of Study: We will learn about our local community helpers, including police, firefighters, nurses, and doctors. We will also focus on functional life skill of identifying important safety signs and landmarks.
Special activity: Field trip to a Tualatin Valley Fire Station
Parental Responsibility: Payment for tri-met bus ticket, permission slip, disposable cold lunch

March
Thematic Unit: SRC on Broadway!
Topics of Study: We will rehearse and perform a small play, while learning about different emotions and social roles.
Special activity: Attend a dress rehearsal for a production at Arts and Communication Magnet Academy (ACMA).
Parental Responsibility: Payment for tri-met bus ticket, permission slip, disposable cold lunch

April
Thematic Unit: Planes, Trains and Automobiles!
Topics of Study: With our prior experience using public transit systems, we will further our knowledge of different modes of transportation in our community.
Special Activity: Gymnastics field trip at Spectra Gymnastics
Parental Responsibility: Payment for tri-met bus ticket and Spectra admission, permission slip, disposable cold lunch

May
Thematic Unit: The SRC Team!
Topics of Study: At the track meet every year there is a school spirit celebration. We don’t know the theme yet, but in the spring we will start preparing for our exciting trip!
Special activity: Beaverton School District Track and Field Invitational
Parental Responsibility: school spirit apparel item, permission slip, disposable cold lunch

June
Thematic Unit: Summer Camp!
Topics of Study: We will participate in a camp themed review of the year with Camp-Learned-a-Lot with the rest of the students at Sexton Mountain.
Special activity: “Hiking” through the THPRD parks within 1 mile of Sexton Mountain Elementary
Parental Responsibility: permission slip
