Upper SRC Curriculum Overview

The SRC Program (Structured Routine Center) is a social communication intensive program that utilizes research based methodology and curriculum to provide foundational education services for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other communication related disorders.

Specific Curriculum used in the SRC program:

• EDMARK
• Sight-word reading program
• Read Well
• Phonics based reading program

• Touch Math
• Visual/tactile math program
• Yogarilla
• Motor program used to improve fine and gross motor skills, sensory processing, attention, communication, and cognition.

Daily Activities:

• Circle Time: There are three circle times throughout the school day. Morning circle, Calendar circle, and Song circle. During each circle time students engage in turn taking, asking questions, responding to questions, greetings, making choices, attending, and social activities.
• Jobs: Each student has a job during circle time. Jobs include Who's Here Today Helper, Greeter, Lunch Helper, Weather Helper, Counter, Flag Leader, and Line Leader. Students also help with emptying trash cans and cleaning the classroom at the end of each day.
• Academics: Each day students have a 20 minute Math table time, a 20 minute Reading table time, and a 20 minute Writing table time. Within these tables times, Reading, Math, and Writing curricula are used. There are 2 to 3 students in each group during a table time. Each student's specific IEP goals regarding Math, Reading, and Written Language are addressed within these times.   
• Social Studies: The forth 20 minute table time is Social Studies. In this table time students work on following directions, fine motor skills, generalized academic tasks, as well as creative thinking and reasoning.
• Life Skills: The fifth table time is Life Skills. In this area students are completing functional tasks and routines that one would encounter in daily life. For example, we have been working on sorting and folding clothes. A routine that could be put to good use at home!
• Free Choice: At this time students have the opportunity to practice turn taking, being polite, sharing and spontaneous speech. While staff help facilitate appropriate play and communication, student's social and behavioral IEP goals are focused on during this unstructured time.
• Sensory Room: We have a fantastic sensory room right next door! We share this space with the Primary SRC. The sensory room includes a swing, water and sand table, bean bag chairs, etc.
• Snack: Snack gives students an opportunity to request items, describe what they taste like, and hopefully increase tolerance towards new foods.
• Speech/OT/APE: Students receive services from these related service providers to meet the needs detailed in their IEPs. These specialists also observe other daily sessions, consult with staff, and participate in classroom activities.
• Music/Library/Technology:  Students spend 20 minutes in each activity at least once a week. We sing songs and play instruments in Music, listen a read aloud and check out books in Library, and learn computer skills in Technology!

Topics of Study: practice of mastered personal information, describing self using attributes (i.e. hair color, eye color, weight, height), indicating preferences and interests

Special activity: presentation about self to peers in both classes

Parental Responsibility: send school supplies from supply list

October

Thematic Unit: Safety

Topics of Study: safety rules around school, home and the community, basic concepts of danger, community members

Special activity: Pumpkin Patch

Parental Responsibility: Payment for pumpkin patch, permission slip, disposable cold lunch

November

Thematic Unit: Food

Topics of Study: types of food using choosemyplate.gov, basic concepts of nutrition, portions and food preparation

Special activity: Thanksgiving lunch prepared by students for each other

Parental Responsibility: Each family will be asked to donate one food item (i.e. one can of food)

December

Thematic Unit: Using Money

Topics of Study: earning and spending money, preparation for student store in 2014

Special activity: Shopping Field Trip to the Dollar Tree

Parental Responsibility: Payment for tri-met bus ticket, and 1-2 dollars for student to use at the Dollar Tree, permission slip, disposable cold lunch

Topics of Study: healthy ways to stay active, basic mechanics for popular sports

Topics of Study: habitats, diets and characteristics of animals

Topics of Study: how plants and animals grow, different climates and ecosystems

Topics of Study: Every year the track meet encourages each school to show their school spirit, so in preparation; we will be learning more about Sexton Mountain Elementary

Topics of Study: camp themed review of the year with Camp-Learned-a-Lot with the rest of the students at Sexton Mountain

Zoo!

We went to the Oregon Zoo!


It was an amazing field trip. Luckily the rain held off until we returned safely and soundly to Sexton Mountain. We all saw many animals and wrote about them in our zoo notebook.

It's Been Awhile...

Hello again!

So much has happened since November.

Here's a quick recap:

December

Our class participated in a gift exchange with Miss Ashlee's class. We all sat around the holiday tree singing holiday tunes. We created a handwritten card and a handmade gift for each student in Miss Ashlee's class. We worked on turn taking, waiting your turn, and creating a gift for someone else. It was tons of fun!

January
 
This month we... I'm going to be honest. I don't have any pictures of January. I'm sure we had a great time learning, creating, imagining, playing, and did I mention learning?!  :) 

February 

We went BOWLING! I'm sure you heard the students chatting endlessly about our fantastic bowling field trip!  We took a Trimet bus to Sunset Lanes. It involved lots of walking, a few minutes of bowling, a short time eating, and more walking! We were very lucky it was a nice day!

March

March started out with Dr. Seuss' birthday.  On March 2nd we ate...green eggs and ham! Yum! It was truly a wonderful surprise! Each student was offered a bowl full of green eggs and green ham. Most students at least attempted to eat this exciting snack. A few students posed for pictures, then promptly dumped the eggs and ham into the garbage! Regardless of the outcome, it was a great language opportunity for all students. They continue to talk about it to this day!

Soon April will be upon us!

Hopefully Spring weather will be upon us soon. When we have a beautiful, sunny day we may take a leisurely stroll around the track!

We're looking forward to a field trip to the Zoo in April, the Special Education Track and Field events in May, and then the end of the school year in June. Wow! Time sure flies when you're having fun.

November Update

Time flies when you're having fun and November is certainly flying by! 

We've been up to great things in the Upper SRC. 

Cooking! 

Last week we made Wobble Gobble Cookies! It was a great time had by all. We followed a visual recipe to make our fantastic creations! 

 Wagon! 

Thanks to the wonderful website Donorschoose.org our classroom has a wagon! It is tradition at Sexton Mountain for the general education classes to roll their wagons full of lunch boxes to the cafeteria. Now the Upper SRC can partake in this fun tradition! We are practicing walking slowly with the wagon and navigating sharp turns!  

Pepsi Refresh Grant 

Our fabulous speech pathologist, Jessi Lynch, wrote a grant proposal for the Pepsi Refresh Project! If we win, we could get a SMART board! How do we win? Simply by voting! Every day!

Here’s how:

2.   Click on the "Vote for this idea" button, and create an account through Pepsi, or you can login through Facebook.

3.    Now just remember to go back every day to vote for us!! 

The grant is through the Pepsi Refresh Project and we need your votes to be in the top 20 in order to get funded.  Every person gets to vote every day for 5 different projects.  Please make sure ours is one of them!!  The voting only lasts for the month of November, so please start now and keep going through Thanksgiving.  These SMART boards are amazing and will make an incredible difference!  And all it will take is a minute of your time every day!

Thanksgiving 

 

It will be upon us before we know it! In class we have been talking a lot about our favorite Thanksgiving food. Macaroni and cheese is the clear winner! We have also been discussing what we are thankful for. The answers from the students are incredible. We've had responses range from, "Mac and cheese" all the way to "Grandma." Sometimes we just sit back and let their responses sink in. It brings tears to our eyes. :) 

Happy November! It will be Winter Break before we know it!

Pumpkin Patch!!

We had a fantastic time at our pumpkin patch field trip! We took a school bus from Sexton Mountain to the Plumper Pumpkin Patch. 

The bus had a very calming effect on us!

Once we got to the pumpkin patch we learned all about the different types of pumpkins and squash they grow on site. We were able to touch the different pumpkins and feel if the skin was bumpy or smooth! Then we went on a hay ride to see the grounds.

After the hay ride we ate lunch in a green house that had a cover. It was sprinkling rain, so we were grateful for the roof over our heads! 

We were so hungry! 

After lunch it was on to the slide, corn maze, and petting zoo! We all had a great time sliding down a huge slide, running through the maze, and petting donkeys, baby cows, goats, and even a llama.

Then if was off to the U-Pick pumpkin patch! Picking our own pumpkins was very fun. We had to make sure we could carry our own pumpkins. So we made sure that each pumpkin wasn't too heavy!

Thank you to all the parent volunteers who helped make this field trip a success. We had an incredible time. We learned about pumpkins and squash, we took turns and waited patiently, and picked out our own pumpkins independently. All in all, the pumpkin patch was a success!!
